We are a non-profit making registered charity,
managed by unpaid volunteers looking to make a contribution to their local
community.
We are affiliated to the Abbeyfield Society,
which operates throughout the UK (and beyond). We are an independent
charity in our own right, but draw on the support and advice of central
Abbeyfield services, living up to the standards set by the movement, and
sharing a common belief in:
- The importance
of helping older people to enjoy a life free from loneliness and
insecurity in comfortable, homely surroundings.
- The part that
local volunteers can play in helping to achieve this.
We have a paid, trained staff dedicated to providing the physical
and medical care which our residents need. Where our volunteers play a
vital role is:
- Providing the
operational skills we need to administer the house and ensure it
continues to meet the changing needs of older people - skills such as
finance and accounting, property maintenance and development,
personnel management, marketing and IT skills and general management.
- Helping to
improve residents’ quality of life, by:
- Befriending
them, chatting with them, perhaps doing minor shopping or writing
letters for them, helping them solve minor problems
- Providing
transport for them to make local visits
- Acting as our
librarian, in liaison with the local library.
Our volunteers arrange outings and in-house
entertainment and birthday and Christmas parties and presents.
Volunteers also serve on our Board of Trustees,
which determines our overall policy and strategy for the future, and the
House Management Committee, which is responsible for the day-to-day-running
of the house.
